What are NPEs and why should they concern me?

NPEs (Nonylphenol Ethoxylates) have been widely used in a variety of industrial detergents. Although once used in household detergents, the EPA and detergent manufacturers have cooperated to eliminate this practice. The use of products with NPEs leads to widespread release into the water and can be toxic to fish and other aquatic animals. Today, many industrial laundries continue to use detergents with NPEs.

The wash process we utilize at Gunderson is safer and environmentally sustainable. We wash with:

  • Products that are 100% free of NPEs, phosphates and EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid)
  • Detergents that are independently certified as “Green” by the U.S. EPAs Design for Environment (DfE) program.
  • Wash formulations that allow for energy and water reduction and increased productivity

What does Gunderson do to stay environmentally friendly?

Our mission at Gunderson is to provide the highest quality products and services in a sustainable and resourceful way. Here a few ways we care for our earth:

  • Water recycling and efficiency
  • Eco-friendly solvents and organic starch
  • High efficiency lighting
  • Material and linen recycling programs

Since Gunderson is not in the health care industry, do you really understand the health care environment? How?

Yes, we understand health care. Gunderson staff participates in health care educational programs and belong to ALMIEHA, and WHCA to stay informed of guidelines and regulations. We are accredited by the TRSA https://www.trsa.org/ and partner with our health care customers to understand their specific wants and needs.

We launder our own linen. Would outsourcing linen be more efficient and save us money? What are the benefits?

Yes. Outsourcing could be more efficient and save you money. Gunderson offers an analysis of your current laundry program free of charge. It will provide you with accurate and detail results to assist in determining cost savings. Outsourcing your laundry has a number of benefits.

  • Reduced labor expenses
  • Improved linen quality
  • Increased linen quantities
  • No shortages
  • Utilization of space
  • Convenience

Why can’t I make things more efficient and cost effective myself?

An analysis of your current laundry program will identify opportunities for greater efficiencies. Organizations are most often able to obtain efficiencies and cost savings by making use of Gunderson’s purchasing power, laundry process and linen management system.

I use disposables. Why should I switch?

Reusable textiles are environmentally friendly. Additionally, there are hidden costs associated with disposables. When you consider the ordering process, storage costs and waste management expenses of disposables, reusable products often cost less. Gunderson can provide you with an analysis to show your potential savings. request a consultation

I don’t want to lose control of my laundry or linen department.

We understand that outsourcing your laundry or linen will be an adjustment for the department and for your organization. In many cases, the transition becomes a matter of learning a new system for providing linen to your health care facility. Gunderson’s staff will partner with you and be with you throughout the process.

If my facility outsourced our laundry, what would happen with our laundry employees?

Your laundry will require staff to distribute and manage the onsite inventory. There may be positions within your organization to which some of your staff can be reassigned. Also, depending on your specific circumstances, Gunderson may design a program to hire some of your employees to manage the linen onsite.

If I own linen and have Gunderson clean and press it, how do you keep it separate from all other linen?

Some of our health care customers have COG linen (Customer Owned Goods). We would pick up your linen, as we do for all of our facilities. We then sort, wash and deliver your inventory separate from our general linen.

Our residents and patients would like their personal items cleaned. Is Gunderson able to clean these items and make sure they do not get lost?

We have an effective and efficient process in place to clean personal items. Gunderson staff will partner with you to maximize the return of all items belonging to your residents. We also have a unique “Found/Lost Program” designed to eliminate loss of personal goods.

I hear other companies say they are OSHA certified. Is Gunderson certified?

In a word, yes. Gunderson is OSHA-compliant. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) is the federal agency that enforces workplace safety and health. Under the OSH Act, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful work environment. OSHA does provide training, education and outreach, as well as unannounced inspections, to enforce this legislation.

Businesses and employees are not able to obtain an OSHA certification. Employees and management are able to take training classes and receive a certificate of completion, but one cannot become “OSHA certified”.

What does it mean that Gunderson is accredited by the TRSA?

TRSA represents companies that supply, launder and maintain linens and uniforms. As a TRSA member, we help businesses, retailers, healthcare facilities, restaurants, government and other organizations enhance their image and provide clean, safe environments for their employees and customers. Laundries that go thru this voluntary accreditation, must meet the highest of quality standards. For more information, please visit our Affiliation/Certification page or TRSA.

What are Gunderson’s infection control methods?

At Gunderson, we exercise universal precautions. In addition, we have partnered with an independent safety consultant to assist with our policies, as well as staff training and development.

As a local, family business, is Gunderson large enough and equipped with the technology to handle a large health care facility?

Yes. We operate using high-quality equipment and innovative procedures to meet the needs of our health care partners. No matter the size of your health care facility, we will assess your specific needs, evaluate your current linen program and create a customized solution.
